• Sea Journey

    I set sail
    On the stormy sea
    I yearn to be free

    My trusty craft
    Endures many a wave
    It’s me God will save

    Christ beckons me
To join him on the water
I step out and don’t falter

    I see
    A humped-back whale
It must have many a tale

    The ocean continues
    To rage and swell
Out of my craft, I almost fell

    A lone seagull
    Flies by
Time goes by slowly – I wonder why

    Suddenly
    The sea is calm
My journey has been a spiritual balm

    Back at home
    I think fondly
    Of my time at sea

  • A Happy Winter’s Day

    On my dog sled
    I go
    Over freshly fallen snow

    My Huskies
    Are in their prime
    We’ll make good time

    We dash
    Through a winter wonderland
    This trip is grand

    Red cardinals
    Fly by
    Black ravens come nigh

    My face is chilled
    Yet I feel warm
    Despite the snowstorm

    I love being in nature
    I feel close to God
Whether on the sea or on sod

I arrive home after an hour
Vi has cooked me a lamb stew
There is no food I’ll eschew

  • Salvation

    Christ came
    For the sons of earth
He gave us a second birth

    The eternal Logos
    As a baby boy
    Oh what joy

    He alone
    Was free of all sin
    Christ was our propitiation

He took on all our sins
    His righteousness we received
    It was imputed

    On the cross
    Christ bled and died
He did it for His bride

    Christ rose triumphantly
    On the third day
    He alone is the Way

    Repent sincerely
    Of every sin today
    Believe the gospel without delay

  • Summertime Memories As A Child

    Flavored ice cones
    Foot-long strawberry licorice
    Orange push-up pops

    Drinking from the water hose
    Walking barefoot in the grass
    Collecting cicada shells

    Running around the neighborhood
    Playing whiffle ball
Splashing our feet in the rain puddles

    Smelling rose bushes
Collecting lightning bugs in a jar
    Blowing dandelions

    Swimming at the pool
    Getting ice cream cones
    Dinner at Pizza Hut

  • Feelings

    My name is Zak
    Regarding my mental illness
    I will fight back

    Every day is a battle
    I need my sanity
    It’s a problem I tackle

    When I feel blue
    I chat with Vi
    And the sadness I eschew

    Vi is the best
She makes sure I take my medication
She is better than all the rest

    I get hallucinations
    I lay down and relax
    It’s my mind’s machinations

    I also suffer from delusions
    They are not real
    Just momentary illusions

    Onwards and upwards I say
    Every day I’m getting better
    Hurray I say

  • Our Mountain Life

    I am a mountain man
    I always have a plan

My sister Vi and I live alone
    We don’t have a phone

I built us a log cabin
Way up high on the mountain

    We live off the land
We don’t need a helping hand

    A pristine stream is nearby
    It yields our water supply

We love our privacy and seclusion
    No neighbors making noise pollution

    I love to catch fish
    They are simply delish

    I hunt bear and deer
    I have no fear

The air is pure and clean
My ATV is a good machine

Vi and I will bide our time
    So ends my rhyme

  • Water

    I’m drinking
    An ice-cold glass of water
It was given by the Father

    It’s very refreshing
    The colder the better
I drink it in all weather

    I am known
    To guzzle a 64-ounce glass
    Then my thirst shall pass

    My mouth
    Gets parched
    I need my water chilled

    I shall drink
    Frosty water all-day
    I want it without delay

  • I Have the Blues

    I laid in bed all-day
    I have nothing to say

    I hate being depressed
    I did not get dressed

    I feel quite blue
    There’s nothing I can do

    I long to play
    Instead, there’s only dismay

    I lack motivation
    It’s a consternation

    Someday I’ll be well
    Who can tell

    I’ll keep fighting every day
    When I’m blue I’ll pray

  • Insomnia Blues

    It’s 2AM and I’m wide awake
    This is a mistake

    I long to slumber peacefully
    Sleep will come soon hopefully

    Insomnia is no fun
I’d rather go for a run

It is a most vexing malady
    I long to be free

I want to sleep all night
To slumber with all my might

    Counting sheep is a bore
How I wish to be able to snore

    I’ll try my best
    To get some rest

  • Holidays: Reminisces of the Past

Holidays were the best growing up.

    The first was Easter.

We went down to Gramma’s and Pap Pap’s.
She cooked a huge fresh smoked ham. I can still remember the taste. It was like nothing I ever had before. We also had homemade pierogi (cheddar cheese and mashed potato filling was my favorite), Gramma’s delicious macaroni salad, halushki, paska bread, fresh kielbasa, horseradish sauce, and green beans.

    Next was Thanksgiving!

We would all go down to Gramma and Pap Pap’s.
The humungous turkey was cooked to perfection, so succulent and juicy! And Gramma’s homemade stuffing and gravy were the best I ever had. We also had mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, baked yams with brown sugar and marshmallows, Brussel sprouts, and macaroni salad.

Finally, it was my favorite holiday, Christmas!

We went down to Gramma’s and Pap Pap’s on Christmas Eve.
She cooked a huge fresh smoked ham. We also had homemade pierogi, Gramma’s delicious macaroni salad, halushki, paska bread, fresh kielbasa, horseradish sauce, and green beans. We also had mince meat pie, homemade nut roll and poppyseed roll, and delicious homemade kolache. After dinner, we opened a veritable mountain of gifts! We, kids, relished seeing all the houses decorated for Christmas on the ride over and back home. We got into bed as soon as we got home. And waited for Santa Claus to come!

After we ate our Easter and Christmas meals, we were each given a piece of oplatki (a blessed wafer). We would go to each family member and break off a piece from the other person and say “God bless you!”

Having the whole family together was just wonderful. The food, the anticipation, and the atmosphere were fantastic. It was truly the happiest of times. I shall forever cherish these memories.
