Are Roman Catholic Beliefs Biblical

The following are various beliefs of Roman Catholicism, contrasted with the teachings of Scripture.

  • RCC: The worship of Mary, the “Saints”, images, and relics.
BIBLE: The holy Trinity is the one and only true object of worship.
    (Acts 12:23; 17:24-29)
  • RCC: The Catholic pope is the head and foundation of the visible Church.
BIBLE: Christ is the sole Head and Foundation of the visible Church.
    (Ephesians 5:23)
  • RCC: A universal visible hierarchy.
BIBLE: Local, autonomous New Testament churches.
    (Acts 13:1-3)
  • RCC: The Apostle Peter is the “Rock” on which the Church was built.
BIBLE: Christ Himself is the one and only Rock on which the Church is built.
    (1 Corinthians 10:4)
  • RCC: The authority of the decrees and dogmatic assertions and affirmations
of the popes, the authority of tradition. the so-called infallible
magisterium (teaching authority), and the voice of the various councils.
BIBLE: The Bible is the only rule of faith and practice, and the New Testament is the only Law of Christianity.
    (Matthew 15:6-9)
  • RCC: Conferred absolution by a human priest.
BIBLE: The forgiveness of sins by God only.
    (Psalm 103:3; Mark 2:7-11)
  • RCC: Confession in the ear of a priest.
BIBLE: Confession of sin to God only.
    (1 John 1:7-9)
  • RCC: Many mediators, namely, the “Saints” in heaven, angels, and Jesus’ mother Mary.
BIBLE: Only one Mediator between God and man, the Lord Jesus Christ.
    (1 Timothy 2:5-6)
  • RCC: Jesus’ mother Mary is sinless.
BIBLE: Christ alone is sinless. Everyone else has original sin.
    (Romans 3:23; Romans 5:12;
  • RCC: Jesus’ mother Mary is a virgin her whole natural life.
BIBLE: Scripture explicitly says Mary and Joseph had sex after Jesus was born.
Further, it mentions Jesus’ half-sisters and half-brothers.
    (Matthew 1:25; Matthew 12:46; Matthew 13:55-56; Mark 3:31-34; Luke 8:19-21; John 2:12; and Acts 1:14)
  • RCC: Mary was assumed to heaven.
BIBLE: She died because she was a sinner.
(Nowhere in Scripture does it support the notion that Mary was sinless. Nor does it teach an assumption of Mary.)
  • RCC: Priests must not be married.
    BIBLE: Teaches married pastors.
    (1 Timothy 3:2)

As you can see, Roman Catholic beliefs are often negated by the witness of Scripture. Many beliefs in the Roman Catholic faith cannot be supported by Scripture. This illustrates why Sola Scriptura (Scripture Alone) is so important.

  1. Interesting. Did you know the Catholic Mirror posted articles about Protestants claiming Sola Scriptura yet squatting on a Catholic holy day. Just search for “Rome’s Challenge”. The article’s titles read, “THE CHRISTIAN SABBATH The Genuine Offspring of the Union of the Holy Spirit and the Catholic Church His Spouse. The claims of Protestantism to Any Part Therein Proved to Be Groundless, Self-Contradictory, and Suicidal.” [From the Catholic Mirror of Sept. 2, 1893.]

    Here’s an excerpt:
The Adventists are the only body of Christians with the Bible as their teacher, who can find no warrant in its pages for the change of day from the seventh to the first. Hence their appellation, “Seventh-day Adventists”. Their cardinal principle consists in setting apart Saturday for the exclusive worship of God, in conformity with the positive command of God Himself, repeatedly reiterated in the sacred books of the Old and New Testaments, literally obeyed by the children of Israel for thousands of years to this day and endorsed by the teaching and practice of the Son of God whilst on earth.

Per contra, the Protestants of the world, the Adventists excepted, with the same Bible as their cherished and sole infallible teacher, by their practice, since their appearance in the sixteenth century, with the time honored practice of the Jewish people before their eyes have rejected the day named for His worship by God and assumed in apparent contradiction of His command, a day for His worship never once referred to for that purpose, in the pages of that Sacred Volume.

  2. Some people just choose to believe some things without actually understanding that what they accept as truth is not the truth. It’s really sad how distorted the religion became. It is like they rewrote what everyone should believe in. The theoretical is accepted as the reality. People should go back to what the Bible says! False doctrine is not what Jesus intended!
