We do not have an infallible authority for science or mathematics, yet we are able to discover truth through our God-given faculties! It is a very false Catholic assertion that we cannot know any Biblical truth without an “infallible Magisterium” (a teaching authority). See Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) 2035. They just choose to believe in the fallible opinions of a select group of men such as Church Fathers, bishops, and popes. We choose to believe in God’s undiluted self-interpreting Word via Sola Scriptura, and we also have a fallible Magisterium of the teachings of the Reformers as well as great theologians that God has blessed us with! The primary Magisterium for a believer must be their own mind and spirit as guided by the Holy Spirit! This trumps all other authorities.
“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.”
John 16:13
Scripture commands us to use our minds, not to rely on so-called “infallible” teaching authorities.
“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”
Romans 12:2
Catholics delude themselves into thinking it’s possible to have an infallible Magisterium. They tout this as evidence of their superiority and status as the One True Church (CCC 2105) – and the only Church! Catholics also assert that the pope is infallible when teaching on the matter of faith or morals. This is too is fallacious and unbiblical.
“The task of interpreting the Word of God authentically has been entrusted solely to the Magisterium of the Church, that is, to the Pope and to the bishops in communion with him.”
CCC 100
So the Catholic church conveniently teaches that they alone have the authority to interpret Scripture! This is a mind-control tactic used on their members such that they won’t think for themselves and compare Catholic teaching with Scripture! This is absolutely wicked and anti-intellectual! They want unthinking, unquestioning automatons! This teaching is found in cults.
Here is an excellent article by Dr. James White on how Catholics deride and dimiss Protestants by claiming their interpretations of Scripture are not valid and are only relativistically one of many, with no method of arriving at the truth!
One response to “Teaching Authority”
Without infallibility is the Church founded by Christ himself, we are all doomed to guess the canon of the bible, Christ’s teachings on faith and morals and the entire gospel, with our most researched, popular and scholarly arguments. but no absolute certainty in these matters. We can unfortunately be more certain on matters of science and mathematics but not God’s own Divine Revelation. Its just guess work. …
