Eclectic Medley

Here are 3 songs I was listening to this afternoon through Alexa on our Echo Dot smart speaker.

First Song

The first song is “Seasons Change”, a synth-pop R&B song (1987) from the American girls’ group Exposé. My dear sister Vi introduced me to this song, it’s a favorite of hers and now one of mine! This song was a number 1 hit in America.

Lyrics

Some dreams are in the night time
And some seem like yesterday
But leaves turn brown and fade
Ships sail away
You long to say a thousand words but
Seasons change

It feels like it’s forever
No reason for emptiness
But time just runs away (time runs away)
No more day by day
You dream again, it seems in vain when
Seasons change

(I want you) I want to feel you by my side
(I need you) Don’t you know I need you, baby?

(Seasons change, feelings change)
It’s been so long since I found you
Yet it seems like yesterday
(Seasons change, people change)
I’ll sacrifice tomorrow
Just to have you here today

Forever seems so far away
There’s time for love and for play
You dream about today (about today)
Feeling slips away
The winds that blow, they go away and
Seasons change

(I want you) Don’t hide your feelings from inside
(I need you) I’ve got to have your love now, baby

(Seasons change, feelings change)
It’s been so long since I found you
Yet it seems like yesterday
(Seasons change, people change)

(I want you) I want to feel you by my side
(I need you) I’ve got to have your love now, baby

(Seasons change, feelings change)
It’s been so long since I found you
Yet it seems like yesterday
(Seasons change, people change)
I’ll sacrifice tomorrow
Just to have you here today
Just to have you here today

(Seasons change, feelings change)
It’s been so long since I found you
Yet it seems like yesterday
(Seasons change) Seasons change
(People change) People change

(Seasons change) Seasons change
(Feelings change) Feelings change
Change the season
(Seasons change, people change)
(Seasons change, feelings change)

Second Song

The second song is “Strangers in the Night”, a pop song (1966) from legendary crooner Frank Sinatra who was known for pop and vocal jazz. The song reached number 1 on the American and UK charts. I’ve long loved Sinatra’s work. His songs “My Way” and “New York” are some of my favorites.

Strangers in the Night is a 1966 studio album by Frank Sinatra. It marked Sinatra’s return to number one on the pop album charts in the mid-1960s, and consolidated the comeback he initiated in 1965. Combining pop hits with show tunes and standards, the album bridges classic jazz-oriented big band with contemporary pop. It became Sinatra’s fifth and final album to reach number one on the US Pop Albums Chart. Additionally, the single “Strangers in the Night” reached number one on the pop single charts, while “Summer Wind” has become one of Sinatra best-known songs, making numerous film and television appearances in the years since its release.

At the Grammy Awards of 1967 Sinatra garnered two Grammys for his efforts on this album, including the Record of the Year for the title track, as well as Best Male Vocal Performance for the same song

Lyrics

Strangers in the night exchanging glances
Wond’ring in the night what were the chances
We’d be sharing love before the night was through

Something in your eyes was so inviting
Something in your smile was so exciting
Something in my heart told me I must have you

Strangers in the night
Two lonely people, we were strangers in the night
Up to the moment when we said our first hello little did we know
Love was just a glance away, a warm embracing dance away

and

Ever since that night we’ve been together
Lovers at first sight, in love forever
It turned out so right for strangers in the night

[instrumental-first three lines of chorus]

Love was just a glance away, a warm embracing dance away

Ever since that night we’ve been together
Lovers at first sight, in love forever
It turned out so right for strangers in the night

[Dooby-doooby-doo and other scat to end]

Third Song

The second song is “Kyrie”, a pop song (1985) from the American pop-rock band Mr. Mister. It was a number 1 single in the US and Canada. One of the most famous prayers is the Eastern Orthodox “Jesus Prayer” which is “Lord Jesus Christ Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner.” The phrase Kýrie, eléison (Greek: Κύριε, ἐλέησον) which means literally “Lord, have mercy” is the basis of the “Jesus Prayer”. The Orthodox will repeat this prayer numerous times throughout the day. Kyrie is also used in Catholic liturgies. I remember when this song first aired on the radio in the 1980s. I was 9 years old. I loved it then, and I love it now!

The lyrics to “Kyrie” were written by Arizona-born John Lang who co-wrote the songs on all of Mr. Mister’s albums. The music was composed by Richard Page and Steve George while on tour with Adam Ant.

Kýrie, eléison means “Lord, have mercy” in Greek, and is a part of many liturgical rites in Eastern and Western Christianity. Kýrie, eléison; Christé, eléison; Kýrie, eléison is a prayer that asks “Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy; Lord, have mercy.” According to Page the entire song is, essentially, a prayer.

Lyrics

Kýrie, eléison
Kýrie, eléison
Kýrie

The wind blows hard against this mountainside
Across the sea into my soul
It reaches into where I cannot hide
Setting my feet upon the road

My heart is old, it holds my memories
My body burns a gem-like flame
Somewhere between the soul and soft machine
Is where I find myself again

Kýrie, eléison
Down the road that I must travel
Kýrie, eléison
Through the darkness of the night

Kýrie, eléison
Where I’m going, will you follow?
Kýrie, eléison
On a highway in the light

When I was young, I thought of growing old
Of what my life would mean to me
Would I have followed down my chosen road
Or only wished what I could be

Kýrie, eléison
Down the road that I must travel
Kýrie, eléison
Through the darkness of the night

Kýrie, eléison
Where I’m going, will you follow?
Kýrie, eléison
On a highway in the light

Whoa, oh, oh
Whoa, oh, oh
Whoa, oh, oh
Whoa, oh, oh

Kýrie, eléison
Down the road that I must travel
Kýrie, eléison
Through the darkness of the night

Kýrie, eléison
Where I’m going, will you follow?
Kýrie, eléison
On a highway in the light

Kýrie, eléison
Down the road that I must travel (will you follow?)
Kýrie, eléison
Through the darkness of the night

Kýrie, eléison
Where I’m going, will you follow? (will you follow)
Kýrie, eléison
On a highway in the light

Kýrie, eléison
Down the road that I must travel (yeah)
Kýrie, eléison
Through the darkness of the night

Kýrie, eléison
Where I’m going, will you follow? (will you follow?)
Kýrie, eléison
On a highway in the light

Kýrie, eléison
Down the road that I must travel (will you follow?)
Kýrie, eléison
Through the darkness of the night

Kýrie, eléison
Where I’m going, will you follow? (will you follow)
